Zumtobel Light Center Vienna

Zumtobel Light Center Vienna

In 2015, the Zumtobel Group and Snøhetta collaborated to design a Light Center, in addition to office spaces, in the IZD Tower in Vienna.

Spanning over 1,000 square meters, the design incorporates a two-storied entrance area, a multi-functional space, a showroom, as well as open-office spaces. The functions are all arranged within zones in a large open plan, maximizing social interaction, facilitating collaboration and conversation, and making room for exhibitions.

The grand foyer and staircase are open to the public and can be used by everyone entering the IZT Tower. This area invites the visitor to the Light Center by using light as the main design element. Within this space, walls transform from flat to folded, while white surfaces create an interaction of light and shadow. By playing with different moods, colors and intensities of light, fostered by the geometry of the walls, the visitor gets tuned into the Light Center upon entrance.

The design allows for a sensorial experience that immediately immerses the visitor into the beauty and possibility of light. In this way, the Light Center is a physical manifestation of Zumtobel’s vision of how light can be used to create new and interesting forms of expression.
